Tammy Smith and her daughter Precious are helping to raise awareness about sickle cell disease.
It wasn’t until Precious became so sick and nearly died that Tammy took her to a different hospital for treatment and learned that Precious had sickle cell disease (SCD). The inherited blood cell disorder causes red blood cells to morph into a crescent (“sickle”) shape and get stuck in small blood vessels. This blockage inhibits blood flow, which deprives tissues of oxygen and causes severe pain and tissue damage.
This is Tammy Smith. She is the founder of A Precious Organization. She is pictured here at the 3rd annual walk for awareness of Sickle Cell. Funds raised are used to assist families who are dealing with sickle cell and to aid in funding for a cure.
This is Precious Lee. She was diagnosed with Sickle Cell as a very young child and has to have blood transfusions when she has a crisis. She is pictured here getting a blood transfusion. A Precious Organization holds blood drives annually for crisis situations such as this one.
